Abstract

Nik Muhammad Salleh Wan Musa was born in Kelantan. He was an outstanding scholar who initiated the movement of reformation in his hometown. He started this idea after he has finished his studied in Mecca and India. He came from a family of scholars, and was raised up with sufficient knowledge that led him to pursue his studies to a higher level abroad. As a result, he wrote a treatise entitled Kuliah Pengajian al-Qur’an, as an effort by him to expose to society regarding the exegesis of al-Qur’an. This research uses the methodology of library research and field research that includes historical methodology, documentation, as well as interview in order to achieve the targeted objectives. This dissertation also intended to introduce Nik Muhammad Salleh Wan Musa and his treatise, Kuliah Pengajian al-Qur’an, together with the methodology used by him while completing the book. His idea of reformation will be analyzed and being exposed as research findings. Among the ideas discussed are the concept of nubuwwah, no compulsion in religion, pan Islamism, Islam and nationalism, and the battle of blind followers. The writer hopes this research will contribute to the field of Quranic studies and hopefully Nik Muhammad Salleh Wan Musa’s effort in providing understanding of the content Qur'an will be continued and followed by Muslims in Malaysia.
