Abstract

The topic that l have chosen is intended to compare performance of UMNO in 1999 Election with that ·of the previous election. The public is quite aware with the instability in UMNO during the Election 1999. Therefore, it is my intention to show the strategies taken by UMNO to overcome this problem. The 1999 Election was the last election held in this decade. Although no tragic incident has happened during the election, UMNO needs to look seriously into the reaction of the public over the sacking of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the deputy prime minister, the economic crisis and UMNO's internal problems itself. l have also discussed about the opposition's strategy to play up certain issues. This has given rise to the negative attitude shown by certain people toward the government. PAS may become a strong opposition force for UMNO in the next election especially with her impressive victories in certain areas where she has contested. UMNO's performance in the 1999 Election was quite disappointing. UMNO has to learn from its defeat and make changes. On the other hand, UMNO is very fortunate to have Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohammad as its President. His charismatic leadership and unquestionable abilities has made the 1999 Election a success.
