Abstract

This research was carried out in Sekolah Menengah Sri Kuala Lumpur, a private school  in Subang Jaya. The purpose of this research was to identify the problems faced by students of this school . It sought to determine whether there was a significant difference  in the problems faced by male students and female students of this school. It also tried to  determine whether there was a significant difference in the problems faced by form five  students as opposed to form three students of this school. A total of 120 students were randomly chosen as the respondents of this study. The number of respondents were divided equally , based on gender and class (form five and  form three). The instrument used in this study was a questionnaire modified from the Money Problem Checklist, which contained 90 items which were divided into six main categories of problems. They were health and physical development problems, social, moral and peer problems, family-related problems , financial problems, academic and school-related problems and finally career- related problems. Basically this research tried to identify problems faced by private school students in different aspects of their lives. Career-related problems that were looked into were problems relating to inadequate knowledge of the working world, choice of career and career expectancy of students. Social, moral and peer-related problems dealt with were issues relating to peer pressure, social skills and moral awareness among students. It was also the aim of this research to determine the kinds of family-related problems faced by the students of this school, especially problems concerning relationship with family members. ln addition, this research tried to identify the kinds of financial problems faced by students. This study also sought to determine the academic and school-related problems faced by students like inappropriate learning environment and inadequate learning skills. Finally problems relating to health and physical development like in the area of physical and emotional stress and self perception were also looked into.
