Abstract

This study focuses on gathering the narratives of Jabir Ibn Zayd and al-Hasan al-Basri on interpretation of the Holy Quran, this operation will be done through browsing these two books: Jami’ Al-Bayan by al-Tabari and Al-Jami’ li ‘Ahkami al-Qur’an by al-Qurtubi. The study also aims to examine these narratives in order to discover their methodology, the originality of their thought and the areas of their opinions in understanding the Quranic text, thus inferring the sources and tools they used in their understanding which requires knowing their personality characteristics and their status in the sight of the scholars specialized in this science. The use of that may come in three main points, the first is to classify these narratives according to the rules and regulations of interpretation science, the second is to know to which extent it is possible to arrange these narratives in independent interpretation books, otherwise they are considered merely interpretative opinions, and the third is to state the similarities and the differences the two narratives throughout the chapters of this study. The first chapter consists of a study of the epproach of the Imam Jabir Ibn Zayd, his life and academic background, his scientific legacy, his leadership of the Ibadiyyah denomination and lastly his death. The second chapter discusses the life and upbringings of Imam al-Hasan al-Basri, his scientific status and legacy, being the reference of al-Mu’tazila denomination and his death. The third chapter focuses on the interpretative narratives of the two scholars in these three domains: Quranic science, Islamic Creed and Islamic Jurisprudence. The forth and the last chapter displays a comparative study between the two narratives through two steps: showing each one’s method in the narration then comparing between the two methods.
