Abstract

This dissertation hopes to explain methodology of Belief though the perspective of a reknown translation expert; Ahmad Sonhadji. His expertise is made known in his studies of the translation of selected Belief issues. His proficiency in Al-Quran translation was shown through his masterpiece; „Abr al-Athir which highlights the translation of Belief related verses and also highlighting Ahmad Sonhadji‟s life story. Ahmad Sonhadji is an ulama‟ who strives to explain his belief‟s manhaj through verses that are related to the attributes of Allah which are Af‟al al-Ibad and Qada‟ and Qadar which often perceived differently among muslims. This dissertation also put forward the salaf method as the main guideline in presenting Ahmad Sonhadji‟s expertise in the study of Belief after he claimed his expertise in the area of the translation of Al-Quran. This dissertation integrates two important research methods which are literature reviews as well as field work. Comparison of his view in contrast to other ulama‟s, naming Ibn Taimiyya and Ibn Qayyin to further deepens the discussion of this dissertation. This dissertation proves that the translation of Belief verses related to Allah‟s attributes, af‟al al Ibad, as well as the questioning of Qada and Qadar are influenced by the thinking of ahl- al sunnah wa al –jamaah; which are salaf dan salafiyyah. Previous translation of hadith, which are muktabar had helped maneuvered his Belief thinking. Ahmad Sonhadji has followed the Salaf approach which was to believe in all of Allah‟s attributes without Takyif, tasybih and tamthil (the comparison of Allah‟s attributes with His servants), Ta‟wil or changed to other meanings. His Belief manhaj also explains that all of Allah attributes are genuine and existent as mentioned /„ithbat‟ in the Al Quran and hadith without any doubts. This dissertation also, indirectly, is highlighting the expertise and proficiency of Ahmad Sonhadji in the studies of Belief which has contributed in helping muslims to deepen and understand the religion better. Ahmad Sonhadji endeavors his works by using language that could be comfortable accessible by muslim communities. This man promotes Muslims to own their own set of thinking in order to face the lives in globalization through inheriting the integration of salaf method, as well as the contemporary approach.
