Abstract

Hermeneutic is originally derived from Greek term Hermeneuein, this term was Hermeneutikos which contains three basic meanings, which are, revelation, explanation and interpretation. These meanings came to existence as hermeneutic is applied in studying the Koran in the 19th century, but then tensions arise between Muslim scholars as to which definition is deemed appropriate. This study aims to expose the hermeneutic approach observed and applied by a Middle-East scholar, Muhammad Syahrur in his literature of al-Kitab wa al-Qur’an Qira’ah Mu‘asirah as well as to verify hermeneutic position as one of the theoretical commentary when discussing the Holy Koran. This study consists of four chapters, the first chapter explains the introduction, the second chapter describes itself as a theory hermeneutic and interpreted, the third chapter explains the biography of Muhammad Syahrur and recognition of his works, the fourth chapter analyzes the idea of the book Muhammad Syahrur al-Kitab wa al- Qur’an Qira’ah Mu‘asirah and the fifth chapter conclusions and recommendations proposed. The data are obtained from library resources, in which references are associated with hermeneutical theory and the thoughts of Muhammad Syahrur in his book other than the primary data which was obtained when interviewing the author. Results indicate that Muhammad Syahrur’s school of thought is in parallel with hermeneutic approach, related to linguistic studies. From Research and findings of Muhammad Syahrur, he vividly expresses his rejection to synonyms in the language of the Koran. His lines of thoughts demonstrate a contemporary understanding of the Quranic context which has impacted on the Moslem’s Syariah Law.
