Abstract

This study is an effort to clarify the discipline needed in valuing the recitation of a hadith.  Prime focus is directed specially towards those hadiths of which their trustworthiness has been repudiated and whose origin traceable to the Prophet p.b.u.h has been rejected.  In addition, this study will also clarify all related terminologies used as a yard-stick to provide reasons why the recitation of a hadith is considered weak and unacceptable.  The writer uses the “library-research”method when compiling informations and then analysing those informations by giving his support or criticising on any views being presented.  Focus exposition and explanation on the method used to establish the weakness of a hadith in this dissertation is with reference to well-known books especially those compiled by Ibn Hajar al-„Asqalani such as Hadyu al-Sari Muqadimah Fath al-Bari, Nuzhah al-Nadhar fi Tawdih Nukhbah al-Fikar dan al-Nukat ‘ala Kitab Ibn Salah.  The writer also takes into consideration examples of valuation verdict of hadith as practiced by Ibn Hajar in his book Talkhis al-Habir.  Further on, the writer ends this study by making a conclusion that Imam Ibn Hajar, before judging the value of the recitation of a hadith, he will compile before-hand all the range of values of the origin of a hadith from various sources in the original books of compilation of hadith.  The following process then is to study in detail the condition of each presenter of hadith from the al-jarh wa al-ta’dil angle as recorded by all the ulama‟ hadith of the past.  In general he accepts the valuation verdict of the past ulama‟ like Imam al-Tirmidhi, al-Hakim etc, but at times he will give his own personal views by presenting contentions and arguments which he believe is true.
