Abstract
This dissertation study compares the language metaphor in Arabic and Malay short stories by two eminent authors namely Zakaria Tamer and Azizi Hj. Abdullah. The focus of the study is in the aspect of styles from figurative language in Arabic and Malay as well as examine the similarities and differences. Hence, the objective of this study is to identify the concept of figurative language and position in the science of Balaghah and Rhetoric Malay language other than making a terminology comparison both figuratively and analyze its use in both authors short story texts. In addition, the selection of the two authors from Syria and Malaysia is based on their achievements, strengths and tendencies in their respective fields of writing prose, especially short stories. There have never been a comparative study or analysis on the Arabic Malay texts by earlier researchers. For Zakaria Tamer, his selected short story is entitled Ya Ayyuha al-Karaz al-Mansiy; meanwhile, Azizi Hj. Abdullah, his selected short story is entitled Sami Napuh. The selection of those short stories are because both are packed and rich with figurative language other than displaying criticism on the moral decadence in the society. The study shows there are several similarities between the figurative language used in the Rhetoric Arabic and Malay. The only difference between them is in terms of terminology, situation and how the figurative language is expressed in both languages. The success of a writer, like Zakaria Tamer and Azizi Hj. Abdullah is mostly dependent on their intelligence and skills of inserting their own style of figurative language to their writing, thus making them more unique and fresh.
