Abstract

The concept of shyness is an important concept as it encompasses the principles, behaviors, beliefs and rules that should be observed by its society. In relation to this, the concept of shyness among Malays is regarded as peculiar and unique as it is based on the Holy Quran and as-Sunnah. Basically, it is considered as a character awareness concept for the Malays which is very much related to self  worth, dignity and maintenance of one’s face. This being the starting point, the research  tries to put forward an analysis of the concept of shyness among Malays which is  explored in great depth. The main source of this research is the novel entitled SAGA, written by Abdul Talib Mohd. Hassan. As many as 37 events related to the concept of shyness have been analyzed using both qualitative and quantitative methods. The series of events are analyzed based on the conceptual framework provided by Muriel Saville-Troike (1991) with an emphasis on the communicative components. Thereafter, the data on shyness are categorized into four sub-concepts of shyness according to Mohamed Mansor Abdullah (1993). Face Negotiation Theory introduced by Stella Ting-Toomey (1988) is then applied to the data. This theory enables face negotiation and conflict management styles among Malays be distinguished. This is important because the events related to shyness are associated with ‘face’. Therefore, the concepts that are within this theory, that is, ‘face concern’  and ‘face need’ fulfil the objective of this research. The findings reveal that the social structure and organization of the Malays will be further strengthened if they hold on to the concept of shyness.  Nevertheless, an individual who is devoid of this trait is considered to be a disgrace and an embarassment to his society. On the whole, it is hoped that this research will pave the way and increase our knowledge on the concept of shyness which is embraced by the Malays.
