Abstract

TENGKU AZIZ BIN RAJA ABDULLAH - Pilgrimage Fund: An analysis on its contribution to Muslim community in Federal Territory, Kuala Lumpur. Dissertation for Usuluddin Faculty, Islamic Academy University Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. Pilgrimage Fund is a statutory body established to provide services among Muslim community in Malaysia especially in the haj management. The fund was set to assist Muslim in saving their money gradually to eventually perform haj or umrah. It was also responsible in expanding the saving through profitable investment for the benefit of depositors. Indirectly it has assisted in improving the economic level of Muslim community. To achieve this, the writer has to gather the information by using two types of research i.e. Library Research and Filed Research. Library Research was used in almost all the chapter. which includes First. Second. Third and a portion of Fourth Chapter. In Field Research, the writer used several methodologies like interviews, questionnaires and observation to obtain accurate information or data. The research was focusing to the comparison among Muslim community in Federal Territory, Kuala Lumpur before and after the formation of the fund. This was to coincide with the topic and to produce qualitative research. As an introduction, in First Chapter, the writer provides an overview regarding related topics to the research and analysis. Among others, it focused on the early expansion of the fund in simulating economic activities among Muslim community in Federal Territory, Kuala Lumpur. Other topics being discussed were the identification of the problem faced by the community, the importance of the research, it's limitation, overview of the past research, the definition of the topics discussed and finally to explain the purpose or the objective of the research. In Second Chapter, the writer emphasis to the expansion element of the fund, in venturing into economic or business activities. The roles played by the Fund in upgrading the economic gain, which was suitable to Islamic aspirations. This economics growth or gain was derived from the saving made by the depositors 10 the fund and the role of the Fund to look for existing or new opportunities to invest or venture for sole purpose of assisting the economic status of Muslim community in federal Territory, Kuala Lumpur. Beside that, the writer also discussed on how the Fund managed the Haj Management. The Board of the viii Fund is responsible in meeting the need or expectation of Muslim community or depositors to perform haj without any hitches either from the night arrangement visa application, accommodation and others issues related to performing haj. In the Third Chapter, the writer was emphasizing to several aspects related to the Fund. As an Islamic Financial Institution in Federal Territory, the Fund played as catalyst to the economical growth from the income generated through the savings from depositors. For that reason, the writer will show what was planned by the Fund in maximizing profit through their investment from the money saved by depositors. In the Fourth Chapter, the writer will discussed the activities by the Kuala Lumpur Branch of the Fund in helping to improve the income from the depositors within Kuala Lumpur. The branch has organized and developed saving schemes or facilities to encourage saving for the future among Muslim community in Kuala Lumpur. The writer also focused on how the income was generated and to where it was invested. Focused was also given to the indirect benefit from the saving. In the last Chapter, the writer summarized which was discussed in every chapters of the dissertation as well as how effective the role of the Fund in upgrading the economic status of Muslim community in Kuala Lumpur. Few proposals were also made towards the Fund to make it more competitive in the market.
