Abstract
he aim of this study is to examine the practices of principals as instructional supervisory leaders in school. This covers aspects of inclination and beliefs towards supervision, principals' practices in implementing curriculum programmes in school, staff development and in supervising the preparation of teaching materials. Apart from that, the aim of th.is study is also to examine the influence of the leadership practices on the attitude and perception of the teachers towards the instructional supervision in school which includes their needs, desires and benefits they gain from it. This study adopted the survey method of research using quantitative and qualitative approaches in gathering data and information. The data is obtained through questionaires and essay questions that have been specially set for the purpose of the study. The respondents consist of 25 teachers and a principal in a secondary school In Kuala Lumpur. Overall, the findings of the study indicate that principal's leadership practices of instructional supervision as perceived by the teacher sample is at the average level. Most of the respondents stated that the school principal's seldom practise the aspects of supervision mentioned earlier. Out of the three aspects, it has been found that the principal practised most in the aspect of supervising the preparation of the teaching materials. As for the inclination and beliefs towards practice of supervision, it was found that the school principal was inclined towards the birocratic approach and stressed more on the hierarchy of management than to others. Due to the emphasis or this aspect, generally teachers attitudes are rather negative towards the instructional supervision practices as demonstrated by the school principal. In conclusion, generally it can be discerned that the principal in this study has not been practising instructional supervision form of leadership that he ought to demonstrate in the execution of his role and function.
