Abstract

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of Web-Based Learning (WBL) in improving students' achievement and interest in Nuclear Energy, which is one of the topics taught in KBSM Physics for Form 4. The WBL site used in the study was developed by the researcher based on Gagne's Nine Events of Instruction. The study was conducted using 30 Form 4 students who took Physics at one of the Smart Schools in Selangor Darul Ehsan. The selection of the students was based on their Physics results in the first semester examination. Two categories of students who had high and low physics abilities were identified. All pSfticipants had been taught the topic (Nuclear Energy) by the same teacher a in traditional classroom. The learning process through WBL took 2 hours. Pre-test and post-test were used to collect data to evaluate the effectiveness of WBL in improving the students' achievement while questionnaires were used to enquire about the interests and opinions of students on WBL. Data were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. The results from the pre-test and post-test indicated that WBL had increased the mean score significantly at p < 0.05. The increase in mean score was higher for the lower physics ability group as compared to the higher physics ability group. The increase in mean score was found to be higher for female students as compared to male students. The findings from the questionnaires showed that WBL had increased the students' interest in the topic of Nuclear Energy as Well as the application of WBL in the learning process. The students' opinions from the study gave positive inputs to those who are interested to apply and realize the use of WBL in the learning process, especially in the Smart Schools.
