Abstract
SJTI SURIYANI BINTI SULAJMAN. Islam In Keningau : The History And The Effect To The Marriage Culture Of The Kadazandusun Bumiputera Community. Thesis, Kuala Lumpur : University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 2001. Information of the arrival of Islam in Sabah is not sufficient, likewise the history of Islam in Keningau is not definite. Based on the information from reliable sources, Islam was spread after the World War Two. Although Islam has changed the belief of Kadazandusun Bumiputera Community, their lifestyle certainly have not change. Customs and prohibition arc assimilated with Islamic way. To see the effect of the arrival of Islam, this thesis focused on the marriage culture of the Kadazandusun community in Keningau. This thesis focused on 1. The arrival of Islam to Keningau. 2. Islam in Keningau today. 3. Kadazandusun Bumiputera Community knowledge of Islamic marriage. 4. The effect of Islam on the K.adazandusun marriage culture. To answer these issues, I have used several methods such as sampling method, collecting data methods and analyst data methods. The conclusions gathered are as follow 1. Islam arrived in Keningau after 2nd World War . 2. In the beginning, Islam bas been spread by individuals from another district. 3. Due to the spread of lslam, today 29% of the community are muslims. 4. Although Islam has changed the believe of the Kadazandusun, their customs which have been assimilated with Islamic ways have resulted in practising their customs as have been practised previously, especially among muslims who arc minority in certain areas. Hopefully, this thesis would trigger readers to contemplate well as an eye opener and a model for other writers to continue making research of this district.
