Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of the problem-solving method In the teaching aspects of akidah improving the critical thinking skills among form four students. The main focus in critical thinking skills is gathering and using information, decision-making, making inference and analogy based on al-Ghazali's (1058-1111) model. This study used the pre-post experimental control factorial design. The sample was drawn from 80 Form Four students two different groups of achievement that is moderate and high-achievers. The study was conducted over a period of 7 weeks involving 9 hours of Interaction. The instruments administered were achievement test questions, questionnaire, observation and structured interview. The test question were based on four categories of critical thinking skills that has been suited the teaching Islamic Education by Zaharah Hussin (1995) from Ennis Model (1995), California State Board of Education (1988) and Beyer, B.K (1988). The questionnaire used was from Gregore Learning Profile Model (1979) to measure learning style. The observation to observe behaviour, student tendencing and classroom leaning enviroment. Structured interview was used as trlagulasian data. The data collected were analyzed through computer using the SPSS program. The study used descriptive statistics involving frequency and percentage to describe study sample and to answer the research question whereby Inferential statistics involving I-test and two-way ANOVA were used to analyse data. The findings of the study indicate that the problem solving method is effective in increasing student achievement in critical thinking skills involving gathering and using information, making inference and analogy as compared to the traditional method for both groups of achievers. It has been found that the problem solving method is only effective In improving student achievement in decision making among high achievers only and not effective among moderate achievers. The problem solving method is also effective in increasing student interest towards akidah aspects for both moderate and high achievers.
