Abstract

Generally, the establishment of educational institutions serves the fundamental goal of fulfilling societal aspirations in terms of social, religious, economic, and political developments. The founding of Muslim College. of Malaya is not exceptional from achieving that goal. The purpose of this study was to unravel the efforts of many individuals and organization, especially within the socio-political context of the 1950's, in establishing and building a premier Muslim college, which served to be the epitome of the higher learning for Muslim youths in Malaya as well as in the Southeast Asian Region. The main focus of this study was on the usage of strategic planning method and sit-based autonomous management concept in the expansion and development of the college in several aspects such as curriculum, finance, infrastructure, and staffing during the period under study. There are three important findings of this study. Firstly, the founders of the Muslim College employed a strategic method of making the establishment of the college a reality. The method involved the formation of the council comprising of the Malay rulers, Islamic advisors of every state, some prominent politicians, some wealthy philanthropists, and many well-known Islamic scholars from abroad. This method greatly increased the bargaining power of the founders, vis-a-vis the ruling British government. Secondly, the autonomy and prestige of the college as independent private corporation began to erode when it formed and academic link with the university that the government intervened in the governance of the college. The implication of this finding is that it serves as caution to any private colleges which desire to twin with any government agencies: total intervention and losing autonomy could be inevitable end result. And the thirdly, the Muslim College significantly improved the rigour and quality of its curriculum by employing some prominent Islamic scholars from abroad and by incorporating the study of the some academic subjects as found in the higher secondary English schools. This finding implies that the Islamic religious schools found all over the country today must constantly upgrade their curriculum in order to be concurrent with the demands of higher education institutions.
