Abstract

The purpose of the this study is to identify factors affecting the implementation of computer literacy programme in a private school. The study also identifies the following: (i) Purpose of implementing the computer literacy programme. (ii) Planning involved in the implementation of computer literacy  programme.  (iii) Problems arising in the implementation of computer literacy programme. (iv) Future plans for computer literacy programme. The sample of the study consists of three persons; the management  personnel, the principal and the computer teacher.  The data for the study were collected using a questionnaire, interviews,  observations and school documents.  The findings of the study include: (i) Many factors affecting the implementation of computer literacy programme, but financial constraint and lack of appropriate software are the main factors impeding implementation.  (ii) The purpose of implementation of the computer literacy programme is the company policy to equip the students with computer skills, cater to parental pressure, using computer literacy programme as a tool for school publicity and to enhance the teaching and learning process. (iii) The problems faced are financial constraints, lack of expertise, the curriculum of computer literacy programme not being appropriate to secondary students, the lack of equipment, and overburdening  the teacher. (iv) To overcome the problems faced, the company increased its investment, formed an IT Committee, reduced the workload of teachers, and reviewed the computer curriculum. (v) Future planning includes building a new computer lab and fully equipping it with the latest hardware and software.  The study shows that although the school is fairly new, it is trying to implement the computer literacy programme.
