Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to establish the role of the principal as an instructional leader towards an effective school based on teacher's perception. This study focuses on the five dimensions of the role of the principal as an instructional leader. The dimensions are defining the mission and vision, managing the curriculum, supervising the teaching-learning process, monitoring student achievement and promoting conducive climate. The sample of the study is Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sultan Abdul Samad, Petaling Jaya. A total of 85 teachers were selected randomly for the purpose of this study. The instrument of this study was through questionnaire. The first 7 items inventoried the teacher's personal-professional background. The second section included 42 items based on the five dimensions of the instructional leadership were forwarded to the respondents. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data The descriptive statistics used were frequency, percentages, mean values and mean percentages to determine teacher's perception on the role of the principal as an instructional leader. One-way analysis (ANOVA) was used to see if there was any relation between age of teachers with the role of the principal as an instructional leader. On the relation between the years of service in the school and the role of the principal as an instructional Leader, t-test was used.
