Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the design of the "Basic HTML Web Site" (LWAH) which included learning the basic language script of HTML (Hypertext Markup Language). HTML is the main language of instruction protocol in sending and receiving information (such as texts, graphic, animation and audio) via Internet. The study on LWAH is divided into three parts that is instructional design, interface design and screen design. A total of 26 Masters in Education students were involved in this study. To obtain the data, these students followed the learning of HTML which was lead by the instructor (researcher) in a big group, followed by pair work using L WAH as learning support material. The data in this study was gathered through online questionnaire. Six instructional design issues on LWAH were studied. On the whole, the results from the study showed that nearly 81 % of the respondents agreed that all the instructional design issues were fulfilled by LWAH. The results of the study also showed that the percentage of those who agreed exceeded 96% for five instructional design issues except for the issue of assessment method (only 85 % agreed). Five interface designs issues on LWAH were studied . The data showed that only 62% of the respondents agreed with all the interface design issues . However, the issue on preparation of navigational button to access long web pages recorded the lowest agreement from the respondents. Finally, the results of the study show that 73 % of the respondents agreed that all the six issues of screen design were fulfilled by LWAH. From the six issues, which were being forwarded, study data shows that three issues obtained 100% agreement from the respondents. These issues were (1) balanced, consistent and harmony screen display, (2) font style, size and color is consistent and comfortable to read, and (3) color combination for screen background , fonts and graphics of LWAH were appropriate. Qualitative data showed that students like most the content, style of presentation, colour combination of the layout and font characteristics of the website. On the other hand they dislike the time taken for downloading graphics, the lack of examples for reinforcement and the unavailability of external links.
