Abstract

This research aimed at finding out student s' metacognitive competence in writing or metawriting. Addition to that, it investigate the level of subcomponents of metacognition in writing; the knowledge in metawriting and its subcategories such as metawriting knowledge of person, writing tasks and writing strategy. 13es ides that, this research aimed to find out the level of competence of students in the second metacognition component; the student s' level of competence in monitoring and self- regulating in writing composition s. This study look at the correlation between the level of metacognition component and students performance in writing composition. The correlation of the level of competence in the metacognition sub componence which are the knowledge of metawriting and its subcategories such as meta writing knowledge of person, tasks and strategies in writing composition were investigated too. Other than that, the correlation between the level of students' competence in monitoring and self regulating in writing composition and their performance in writing composition, and the correlation between variables of race were also analysed. A part from that, this research focused on the correlation of student's performance PMR Bahasa Melayu and their metawriting ability, and the correlation of the performance Bahasa Melayu PMR and the level metawriting knowledge and its subcategories. Finally, This research analysed the correlation between the students performance in PMR Bahasa Melayu with metawriting level and the correlation with other subcomponent; monitoring and self-regulating. The method used was survey method and the data was gathered using questionaire. The samples were 80 female students from SMK Convent, Teluk lntan Perak. The findings of this research indicated that the level of students' metawriting ability in general and the level metawriting knowledge were very high. The level of metawriting knowledge of person was high but the level metawriting ability toward tasks and strategies were very high. However, the level or monitoring and self-regulating ability were high. Besides that, research indicated that the re was no correlation between the level or metawriting ability with the students' performance in writing composition. There was no correlation between the level or metawriting knowledge and its subcategories towards tasks and level monitoring and self-regulating with the performance in writing composition. Correlation between the level or metawriting knowledge or person and strategies with the performance in writing composition docs ex ist. I lowcvcr, there is no correlation between the student s' performance in PMR Bahasa Melayu with metawriting. There is no correlation between the students' performance in PMR Bahasa Melayu with the level or metawriting knowledge of person and the students' monitoring and self-regulating abilities. However, there is significant correlation between students' performance in PMR Bahasa Melayu and the level of metawriting knowledge toward tasks and strategies. Other than that, this research indicated too that is no correlation between the students' level or metawriting and their writing performance for Malay and non Malay students.
