Abstract
This dissertation discussed the networking technology in running distributed multimedia application. Multimedia applications integrate elements such as text, audio, video, graphic, image and animation. These elements have different bandwidth, loss of data, delay and multipoint communications requirements. Multimedia Presentation System (MPS) is a set of applications that integrate elements of multimedia and implemented in a network environment like the internet. This system provides services for input, process and output. MPS is being used for data interchange and information sharing in virtual education. The uses of multimedia elements produce a more effective learning system. The main problem in delivering multimedia elements through network is access delay. The objective of this study is to find the value of access delay for multimedia elements with different size of data. An application based on the concept of Client/Server has been developed for this study, the Multimedia Demo (MultiDemo). It is used to find and record the access delay time. MultiDemo consists of web browser, receive data, real audio, chat, FTP and active movie. Data collection process is being implemented in Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN). Data from this process will be analyzed in tabular and graphical form. From the analysis, every transmission of multimedia elements will experience access delay and the access delay is not dependent of the size of data accessed by the user. Access delay depends on the type of multimedia elements, number of multimedia elements in a file and the application used. The access delay problems can be overcome by using two techniques, the ATM mini cell and Express First Come First Serve (EFCFS).
