Abstract

This study is on the definition aspect in Malay lexicography with the focus on kamus Melayu Inqqeris Dewan. The definition aspect being discussed in this thesis is on the way the definition is done based on the COBUILD definition practice. The elaboration of every word entry is based on the analysis of the computer corpus data. There are six chapters in this thesis . The first chapter provides the background of the study, the objectives, scope and methodology. Chapter II is on the lexicographic convention and definition practice by the COBUILD and kamus Dewan projects. Chapter III presents the computer corpus data as the most important tool to define any entry word . This chapter also discusses the concordances, vi the data which is derived from the computer corpus data. Through these concordances, the definition of a word will be made based on its collocations. Chapter IV is focusses on the word memotong, based on concordances taken from the corpus data. In this case, the COBUILD definition practice will be used. Chapter V concentrates on the words that collocate with the word memotong. From the analysis on the concordances, it was found that every words have different linguistic environments. Chapter VI is the conclusion of the study. In this chapter , it can be concluded that corpus data is very important in producing a dictionary and t he COBUILD definition practice is the great help to the dictionary use r in understanding a word in Malay language.
