Abstract

An efficient solid waste management could also determine the living standards of the people. In order to render quality solid waste management, communities together play important role in the process. Therefore, a research has been conducted among the selected residents of Petaling Jaya, to know the current awareness and participation levels of the community. Certain Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and Community Based Organisations (CBOs) in the area of Petaling Jaya have been interviewed to gain a better knowledge of their function and contribution in building awareness of the community toward promoting a systematic waste disposal. In this respect, a research was also been extended to seek the role of MPPJ as the local authority of Petaling Jaya. Above all, the role of the waste manager in this region, i.e. Alam Flora Sdn. Bhd. is studied. The study identifies the factors that determine a community's active participation. So far, the level of environmental awareness among the people in Malaysia is not as encouraging as compared to developing economies. Although most of them are aware that improper solid waste disposal would lead to environmental degradation, almost a large majority are not contributing positively towards the move. The study concludes that there are more rooms for all parties to contribute to raise the awareness levels of the ageing Malaysian society. In this respect, the role of AFSB and leading NGOs/CBOs are relatively encouraging.
