Abstract

In this paper, Q-switched pulses were generated for the first time in a holmium-doped fiber laser (HDFL) incorporating a niobium carbide-polyvinyl alcohol (Nb2C-PVA) film-based saturable absorber (SA). At a pump power of 285.7 mW, Q-switched pulses were observed with a repetition rate of 20.5 kHz and a minimum pulse width of 4.4 s. The Q-switched spectrum was centered at 2079.5 nm with a 3-dB bandwidth of 5 nm, as well as a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 57 dB. Stability testing was undertaken and no obvious fluctuations in the output were observed, indicating its high stability. The system shows significant potential for various applications such as surgery, free-space optical communications as well as infrared astronomy.
