Abstract
The purpose of this study is to observe the inter-correlation of cognition, language and communication in normal individual subject. The concept, structure and function of each factor is the basis of the said intercorrelation. The researcher expounds two theories on language acquisition, that is behaviourist and mentalist, as well as study the acquisition along with phonological, morphological, syntax and semantic levels. The intercorrelation of cognition, language and communication is subsequently refined using two methods - external and internal - as previously used by Foss and Hakes (1978). Internal representation is observed via cognition and semantic aspects, whereas external representation via language and communication aspects. Survey data is garnered from a girl, Nur Shaheera binti Mohd Shahizal, via observation, audio - recording and tests. It took 25 months to complete, from the birth of the child until she managed to utter meaningful sentences. The researcher concludes the study by construct the inter-correlation of cognition, language and communication model based on two-way communication models by Schramm (1954) and Osgood (1954), cognition process by Mahmood Nazar (1992) and linguistic theory by Ferdinand de Saussure ( 1858-1913). The researcher concludes that not only do cognition, language and communication inter-correlate, but they also complement each other. Furthermore, language, as claimed by the researcher, is a median element in cognition and communication processes. The researcher finally suggests appropriate methods for t he purpose of language acquisition.
