Abstract

Islam is a rapidly growing religion in Japan. The development Islam in Japan has been more positive than in other countries with Muslim minority populations. Nevertheless, the Quran as the primary source of Islamic traditions, has not yet been explored in depth. The research objective has been outlined, including discussion of the development of Quranic Studies in Japan, examining two selected da’wah institution, and analysing the implementation level of Quranic studies. This study adopts a qualitative approach, including the historical methods, document analysis, observation, and open interviews. The data obtained serve as supporting evidence for the analysis. The investigation focuses on several key aspects, the management systems, instructors, participants, and Quranic syllabus. The findings indicate that the IQRA’ program and Celik Tafsir constitute the syllabus for the guidance program for Muslim reverts (mualaf) at the Japan Da’wah Centre. Besides that, Quranic studies at the Hokkaido Islamic Society are structured around the ‘5T’ framework Tilawah (recitation), Tajwid (rules of pronunciation), Tahfiz (memorization), Tafsir (interpretation), and Tadabbur (reflection) which forms the foundation of Quranic teaching. Accordingly, this study proposes several recommendations and guidelines to enhance the systematic and effective implementation of Quranic studies at the Japan Da’wah Centre and the Hokkaido Islamic Society.
