Abstract

This study is done to identify the mastery level of al-‘adad wa al-ma‘du:d in the Arabic Language among students, together with the types of al-‘adad and its regulations related to it. This study also aims specifically to identify students’ weaknesses in learning and understanding the al-‘adad wa al-ma‘du:d concept besides identifying the most difficult aspect and detecting the most difficult source. A few effective steps in understanding and mastering the topic of study were suggested in the final chapter of this research. Samples were taken from 100 form five students of al-Madrasat al-Idri:siyyat and Ma‘had Al-Mi:zan, both in Kuala Kangsar, Perak. This study is a quantitative study and had used descriptive analyses in analysing its research findings. These findings were analysed based on percentage, the mean and the scattered scores in range. Study showed that the students’ level of mastering the topic of study is still weak and needed suitable solutions, especially in decreasing the influence of the students’ mother tongue. Confusion was identified as among the problems faced by students in mastering the topic of study. The students were confused with the types of al-‘adad, in differentiating between al-‘adad mabniy and al-‘adad al-mu‘rab, in placing the suitable dammat, kasrat or fathat signs (short vowels) for the al-‘adad and al-ma‘du:d and were also confused in the usage of al-‘adad al-asliyy or al-‘adad al-tarti:biyy. This study conclusively implies that all Arabic Language teachers and students need to use certain strategies and methodologies more effectively in understanding and mastering the topic of study.
