Abstract
Islamic Boarding Schools are the earliest formal educational institutions in Indonesia that have been growing rapidly since the early 19th century. These institutions are getting marginalized since National Education System had been introduced. However, traditional educational institutions still survive despite their underprivileged. On the basis, this study examines what extent Pondok Pesantren Wakaf Al-Mukhlishin as one of Islamic Boarding Institutions plays its role in conveying Islamic teachings to Batubara community. This study intented on answering these questions: 1 . What are the success factors Pondok Pesantren Wakaf al-Mukhlishin does as to maintain its education system traditionally? 2.What does Curriculum and teaching system Pondok Pesantren al-Mukhlishin use? 3.What does the role of Pondok Pesantren wakaf al-Mukhlishin play to Batubaracommunity? 4.What are the problems faced in teaching Islam to Batubara community and how to fixit?.The problems outlined above have been analyzed by this study and the result found that: 1.Of the success factors Pondok Pesantren Wakaf al-Mukhlishin has is that it is notspared with strong administrative systems and support from Batubara government andlocal community. 2.Pondok Pesantren wakaf al-Mukhlishin have a memorization system that wasprescripted and using the curriculum discussed among teachers.3.Pondok Pesantren wakaf al-Mukhlishin plays a huge role to Batubara community inteaching Islam ranging from teaching kindergarten kids to providing guidance to themoslem community who will perform the Haj. 4.One problem Pondok Pesantren Wakaf al-Mukhlishin faces is financial deficiencyand unequal level of student capabilities. This study expected it can give a contribution for moslem community to have aprofound interest in Islamic Boarding Institutions in North Sumatra Provincegenerally, and Batu Bara particularly.
