Abstract

Surah al-Fatihah is the first surah in Qur'an. This surah contains seven sentences, 25 words and 113 letters, read by every Muslim from 17 to 70 times a day in the obligatory prayers, supererogatory prayers, and other religious matters . This study aims to review the level of skills of reading surah al-Fatihah among mosque congregation in the district of Hulu Langat, Selangor. A total of 390 people selected randomly among the mosque congregation from 13 mosques in the district of Hulu Langat. This study is a comprehensive view about the ability to recite the surah al- Fatihah firmly which includes the legal aspects of recitation correctly, articulating every letter from its articulation point and giving the letter its rights and dues of characteristics, and making neither major nor subtle mistakes. This study also seeks to know the relationship of recitation classes held at the mosques in influencing the mastery of reading surah al-Fatihah among the mosque congregation. This research data is obtained through the interviews conducted by the researchers themselves and oral tests conducted on the respondents. Qualitative data would be analyzed according to content and theme, while quantitative data would be analyzed using Statistical Packages System of Social Science (SPSS) version 13.0. This research found that the ability to read Surah al-Fatihah among the congregation at the mosques still generally in the moderate level, in fact 31.3% of the respondents are in the low category by making at least one major mistake while reciting surah al-Fatihah. Research findings also indicated the existence of the relationship between the existence of recitation classes with skill levels in recitation of surah al-Fatihah, and there are relationships between the response of recitation classes held by mosques with the level of reciting skills of Surah al-Fatihah among mosque congregation. Several proposals are presented to increase the level of reciting skills of surah al- Fatihah among Muslims, especially in the Hulu Langat district.
