Abstract

Surah al-Kahf is a distinctive surah that looks into the narrative discourse through retrospections of some of the most amazing tales that had ever happened in the history of human civilisation and customs. It has 110 verses comprising four main stories: The Story of Asha:b al-Kahf (Cave Dwellers), The Story of Sa:hib al- Jannatayn (Owner of Two Orchards), The Story of the Meeting of Prophet Musa (Moses) and Khidr, and The Story of Dhul-Qarnain. This surah also tells a few anecdotes on the sideline that consist of idioms and comparisons through short tales of arrogance and devil’s deceptions, the consequences of ignoring the teachings of Allah, and instances of life on earth. One of the main objectives of this study is to identify the form and narrative content found in surah al-Kahf and to examine the language elements of the narrative discourse. In the analysis, some aspects of discourse language which are related to narratives such as characters, events, motives, word usage, characteristics of oral dialogues and rhetorics were disclosed. This study also cannot be isolated from three dimensions which are discourse topic, method and style of presentation which encompass narrative topics that present specific characters to explain the characteristics of human nature. The purpose is to provide guidance and good lessons to mankind. To fulfil the requirement for data collection of this research, the descriptions of these four main stories can be found in Chapter Five. However, only two stories: The Story of Asha:b al-Kahf and The Story of Dhul-Qarnain, were chosen to be analysed in Chapter Six.
