Abstract

This study aims at showing the relationship between i‘rab – one aspect of the Arabic linguistic sciences – and qira’at, which deals with the various i‘rab that exist in a particular qira’at. The i‘rab being studied is the formation of words inflection in the al- Quran according to the qira’at mutawatir. The study focuses on the effect these inflections have on the meaning the Quranic verses based on the various qira’at. This study outlines 3 objectives. First, the general relationship between Arabic language and qira’at. Second, the importance of i‘rab and its relationship with qira’at and its effects on meanings. And lastly, the extent the variety of i‘rab that exist in the seven qira’at effects on the surah al-Baqarah. This study is based on library research methodology by collecting the available data and analysing them. The data are obtained from numerous Arabic grammar books, Quranic exegesis, the books on qira’at, the sciences of the Quranic studies and others related to the subject matter. This study concludes that there exist a strong bilateral relationship between the Arabic language and the qira’at. The i‘rab plays an vital role in the existence of the various qira’at. This study also shows that the qira’at contributes significantly to the continual existence of numerous i‘rab and grammatical laws in the Arabic language. This study also finds that the differences in meaning of a certain verse is due to the difference of its i‘rab, but without exceeding the boundries laid down by previous scholars. The meaning of the verses in surah al-Baqarah does not indicate profound difference in meaning, but are mainly due to their differences in literary styles and with respect of lahjah. This study emphasizes the need to study the science of qira’at from a linguistic perspective in line with the study of Arabic language as a means to fully understand the meaning of the Quran.
