Abstract

This research discusses the code switching phenomena among science teachers in Tamil Schools, especially in SJK (T) Vivekananda, Brickfields Kuala Lumpur. The objective of this research is to analyze and draw possible conclusions on the absorption level of the nature of this type of code switching. The notion of polarity and the factors that influence the execution of this code switching is also defined. The researcher selected six teachers for the present study (2 males and 4 females subjects). This selection also takes into consideration the minimum academic achievement that is Diploma in teaching. Another pre- requirement being teaching experience of more than six years. Qualitative and quantitative methods were used by the researcher. The process used in this research includes observation, audio recording, and research based quentionnaires to collect the data. The audio recording was later transcribed so as to analyse on the absorption level of the code switching at word, phrase, clause and sentence level. The research satisfactorly established good absorption level in these categories. It was also established through the research that the absorption level was higher at the of sentence level. The study shows that the subjects used more Tamil then Malay and English in their teaching. So the researcher recommends that all the teachers must cooperate to over come code switching phenomena in teaching to facilitate better communication.
