Abstract

This research studies the concept of al-’Istica:rat in the hadith in Riya:d al-Sa:lihi:n. In general it concerned with the rhetoric of the Prophetic tradition particularly the concept of al-’Istica:rat and its impact in understanding the meaning of the Tradition among Muslim scholars in Peninsular Malaysia. It covers all aspects of the study; the theoretical and the analytical aspects as well as the field research. As for the theoretical aspect of the study, it discusses the important aspects of the rhetoric of the hadith. Among others, it discusses the definition of al-Baya:n al-Nabawiyy and the characteristic and the speciality of the Prophetic language and rhetoric. It will also elaborate the concept of al-’Istica:rat in covering all its important aspects. This includes its classification, the relation between al-’Istica:rat and al-Tashbi:h, as well as its rhetorical value and significance. This study chooses the hadith in Riya:d al-Sa:lihi:n as its textual studies. It focuses on the usage of al-’Istica:rat, its pillars and classification in detail. This part is the most important part of the research. Its aims is to clarify how al-’Istica:rat was used in the hadith of Riya:d al-Sa:lihi:n. It identifies all al-’Istica:rat in the text and analyses it based on the available commentaries of the Hadith and the literatures in Arabic Rhetoric. The field study surveys the effectiveness of al-’Istica:rat in understanding the meaning of the hadith of Riya:d al-Sa:lihi:n among Muslim scholars in Peninsular Malaysia. Its objective is to find out the perception of those scholars on the role of al-’Istica:rat in understanding the meaning of the Hadith and to see to what extent they had applied the concept of al-’Istica:rat in their reading and teaching of Riya:d al-Sa:lihi:n. This part will be the supplementary part for the finding of the earlier part as it is considered as it will access and evaluate the quality of teaching and understanding Riya:d al-Sa:lihi:n in Malaysia. Among the finding of the analysis part of this research is that there are various style of al- ’Istica:rat found in the hadith in Riya:d al-Sa:lihi:n. It has a very clear meaning and far from any form of confusion. In addition, it has elements of jawa:mic al-kalim. And, as far as the field research is concerned, it shows the effectiveness of al-’Istica:rat in the understanding the Hadith of Riya:d al-Sa:lihi:n among Muslim scholars in Peninsular Malaysia. It has close connection with the process of teaching and learning, the quality of majoring the knowledge among the teachers and their backgrounds, as well as their commitment and sincerity in teaching. This study also indicates that the quality of those teachers can be improved by organizing seminars and workshops, giving teaching training and through a continuous research.
