Abstract

Kamus Dewan (KD4) is the latest issue of Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Malay monolingual dictionary. Beside the native Malay words, the dictionary also records a great number of entries of loan words from foreign languages such as Arabic, which is labeled 'Ar'. The loan words normally do not deviate from the narrowing, extension or variation in its actual meaning. As such, the study done is more focused on the aspects of accuracy of the Malay meaning than its original meaning in Arabic with al-Mu‘jam al-Wasit as a key reference in comparing and checking of its original meaning in Arabic besides the use of Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Corpus System. Only the 'Ar' entry which denotes the religious sense is selected for analysis. A lot of narrowing and extension of meaning occurred in the entries that were studied. Meaning of words that were borrowed from the original was not taken in total. Most meanings taken were specific meanings rather than generic meanings. However, there are also specific words that were borrowed were given more generic meaning as compared to the original words. From analysis, it was found that a total of 311 out of 441 religious entries that were labeled “Ar” have accurate meaning compared to the original words. About 18.6% or 82 entries have meanings that are almost accurate. For the last category that was analyzed, it was found that 47 entries or 10.7% of all the entries that were studied did not have accurate meaning compared to original Arabic words.
