Abstract

The Teaching of Arabic in Religious National Secondary School (SMKA) started since 1977 with 11 pilot schools. A special curriculum was designed to achieve communication objectives. In line with the communication objectives a textbook was designed to fulfill the objectives. In order to help students master the vocabulary the textbook provides exercises and glossary on the same page and at the end of the book. This study is aimed to assess whether the approach to teaching vocabulary and learning process are successful. In addition this study is also aimed at evaluating whether students have mastered the vocabulary learned. To obtain the data, two sets of forms consisting of questionnaires were constructed by taking into account the views of Arabic scholars through literature reviews. Two forms were distributed to 7 Arabic language teachers and 30 students of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama Kuala Lmpur ( SMKAKL ). The findings show that the teachers emphasized the teaching of vocabulary and applied the teaching methods as suggested by the Arabic scholars until the students were able to master the vocabulary. This shows that the goal set by the Department of Islamic Education BPI on mastering the Arabic vocabulary has been achieved.
