Abstract

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the values contained in the mango. Emphasis will be given on the values which is assumed to have positive and negative characteristics. The characteristics which makes mango magazines popular are also identified. The study is conducted by using methodical analysis oft he contents and the data o f the study was obtained from the mango translated magazine of the Doraemon series published by Penerbit Tora Aman Teater o f No. 7 Jal an BK 1118, Kinrara Industrial Park, Bandar Kinrara, Puchong, 47100 Selangor viz. the Bahasa Melayu Edition (Volume 1- 3 printed in the years 1993, 1997 and 1999). The study reveals that the manga brings forth positive values in accordance to the 16 pure values listed by the Ministry o f Education, Malaysia in the subject Moral Studies. The main positive values covers educational values especially relating to moral and up to science and technology. The negative values are found to be inconspicuous. The mango is also found to be popular due to its physical characteristics, story line, portrayal of the character and the character itself Jn view o f the tendency to highlight more of its positive values and its attractive characteristics, it can be said that the publication of this translated mango magazine is a good effort and should be encouraged since it can be used not only as light reading material for entertainment purposes but also be used as educational material. In conclusion the manga portrays more positive values and popular values. This study is suitable as general guide for a more in-depth study in the publication of translated manga or for local manga publication.
