Abstract

There has been lots of issues raised about athletes retirement in Malaysia but no research has been conducted on this matter yet. The aim of the study was to explore, determine and describe the experiences of retired Malaysian elite athletes as they faced the twilight of their sport careers and moved to a new and different stage in life. Terry Orlick's EARIS- Questionnaire was used to conduct in-depth interviews with 51 Malaysian elite athletes ( 34 males and 17 females) who had retired from competitive sports. They had all been medal winners or had competed in several international competitions such as SEA Games, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and Olympic Games from year 1984 to 2000. Through the interviews the athletes reflected back on their feelings before, during and after their career as athletes and discussed the reasons for retirement, the transition phase and the post-competitive stage. A number of psychological factors were identified as strongly influencing the elite athletes retirements and the ease or difficulty of the transition for each of the athletes. The results also indicated that large number of athletes had faced some degree of difficulty in the transition out of their sports careers. All the fifty one athletes collectively suggested that Malaysia should come up with an elite athletes retirement program.
