Abstract
The aim of this dissertation as the title shown is to examine the background, biography and personality of Ali ibn Abi Talib as a great muslim thinker who has no match afler the Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h). His thoughts were so huge and deep and related to every aspects of muslim life. This study will solely focus on his thought on the science of al-Kalam. His unique and brilliant explanations become the most important factor to choose him as the most significant figure and his thought as the matter of analysis. Chapter One discusses the background and personality of Ali ibn Abi Talib. Various topics to be examined are his personal and family life, his educations and contributions towards Islamic writings. Ali's uniqueness in the Holy Qur'an and the Holy Traditions, and also his superiority in the battles against his opponents are also not to be forgotten. Finally this chapter will end with the demise of Ali ibn Abi Talib. Chapter Two deals with the concept of Attributes of Allah (Tawbid al-Sifat). The topics discussed including the concept of Allah's Attributes and Self-Existence and also His additional qualities. Comparative views among Muslim scholars and thinkers from different stream of thought will be critically examined with Ali ibn Abi Talib. Chapter Three examines the concept of Allah's justice (al-'Adl al-Illahi). The stress will be given to the words al-cad/ and al-fulm. A few other significant concepts such as the concept of al-aql, Allah's actions and human's actions, the kindness of Allah, al-taklif, al-istita'ah, freewill (al-tajwid) and pre-destination (al-Jabr) and also al-Qada' and al-Qadr are relevant to the above topics and are also examined. Chapter Four discloses the concept of Prophet hood (al-Nubuwwah) and Messengership (al-Risalah). The discussion begins with the explanation and comparison of the words Prophet (Nabl) and Apostle (Rasul). A few other selected topics are the selection of prophets and messengers, their duties and responsibilities towards Allah and mankind. Among other concepts to be discussed are the revelations (al-wahy), inerrancy (al-ismah) and also the miracles (al-mu'jizat). Chapter Five explains the concept of The Day of Resurrection (al-Ma'ad) which was considered among the pillars of Islam. The special attention will be on the concept of spirit (al-ruh, or al-nafs), the death (al-mawt), the barzakh and the day of resurrection (al-ma'ad). A few selected sub-topics also discussed such as al-mizan, al-sirat and albi'thah. The concept of the heaven (al-Jannah) and the hell (al-Nar) will end this chapter. In Chapter Six, a brief conclusion will be given.
