Abstract

The translation of figurative language is an aspect of translation which not only requires the knowledge of languages and cultures of both source and target languages but also of specific discourse and appropriate translation strategies peculiar to idiomatic expressions. This dissertation studies and analyses the translation of figurative language from Japanese into Malay in order to identify types and ways of translating idiomatic language. For this purpose the translation of a novel by Soseki Natsurne (1914) entitled KOKORO has been selected. The translated version is entitled KALBU translated by Thaiyibah Sulairnan (1996). The objectives of this study are :- 1. to identify and to list the types of idiomatic expressions found in the original text 2. to identify and list the translated idiomatic expressions found in the translated text 3. to discover the comparative frequency of occurrence of the idiomatic expressions . 4. to specify the strategies used by the translator in dealing with the translation of these idiomatic expressions. Some of the findings of this study are that. (1) in comparison with the bahasa Melayu version of the novel, the Japanese version makes use of a larger range of idiomatic expressions and uses them more frequently and (2) that the method used to translate idiomatic expressions is mainly translating the meaning of the idiomatic expressions without retaining the idiomatic Imagery.
