Abstract
The concept of Islamization of knowledge was first introduced by Muhammad Iqbal in 1942 but was first defined by Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas in 1977. The concept was further elaborated in a 1989 publication by the Institute of Islamic Thought, U. S. A, entitled 0lslamization of Knowledge". If "lslamization" refers to the liberation of man from the magical, mythological animistic, and national-cultural tradition, and from secular reasoning and language, "Islamization of knowledge" refers to the process of recasting knowledge according to the Islamic worldview. This would entail redefining and reordering of data, rethinking the reasoning, reevaluating the conclusion and reprojecting the goals of the disciplines so that they become enriched and serve the cause of lslam. The idea, thus, is touted to be an important idea and is expected to have major ramifications to the whole Muslim world This study is an attempt to analyse the concept and its implications on the national philosophy of education. Since this is a philosophical inquiry, it uses the philosophical method, namely the dialectic. Dialectic basically consists of analysis, synthesis and criticism. Analysis refers to the process of divid.ng complex wholes into constituent elements; synthesis refers to arranging elements into more complex wholes; and criticism refers to examining the reasons given for certain assertions, finding flows in the arguments and repairing them or revising the assertions. This study also uses the method of conceptual analysis similar to the one used by analytical philosophy of education. The sources of data are all scholarly work on Islamization of knowledge and documents pertaining to the national philosophy of education.
