Abstract

The objective of this research is to introduce a discourse analysis method found in Islamic writings. This research shows that knowledge in this field does not belong to the Western scholars only. The author has chosen a discourse analysis method that benefits a wider scope of audience and of better preference to study. A discourse study of the meaning of The Quran (tafsir) is the first preference in Islam. There are so many tafsir made by Islamic scholars ever since the past decades until today. They were made in various methodology and backgrounds of the authors. The tafsir of al-Quran is able to generates different types of Islamic thinking and mazhabs in the ummah. In addition, this research is aimed to look into the accuracy of a tafsir made by the known scholars which and found scattered in their writings. The author has chosen to focus the shorter and more important surah in The Quran, which is the al-Fatihah. The al-Fatihah is the "gist" of the al-Quran. If observed carefully the al-Fatihah represents the title of all surahs found in the al-Quran. Methods applied by the ulamaks in producing the tafsir were not simply made by themselves but were taken from the al-Quran and Hadiths. In this way all mistakes made by various writers can be identified. This is to remind and caution those who are not qualified in this field to refrain from doing so.
