Abstract

The purpose of this research is 10 analyse the various rhetorical techniques used in 1he political speeches delivered by Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. The main objective of this research is to provide a systematic textual analysis of the speeches, from the qualita1ive as well as the quantitative aspects. In addition, relevant phrases that can be classified under various rhetorical techniques are identified and presented. Grimes' (/975) model of discourse analysis is adopted in a modified form and used to analyse three selected texts o f Mahathir 's political speeches. The three texts are Mahathir's speeches during the UMNO General Assembly in 1992, 1994 and 1996. These three texts are broken down into 1032 sentences and these sentences are used as research samples. The findings of /his research indicate that a total of 13 rhetorical techniques and 37 sub-techniques were employed in Mahathir's political speeches. Nevertheless, not all rhetorical techniques identified can be related to phrases. Furthermore, certain rhetorical techniques tend to occur more frequently with certain speech topics rather than with other topics. This research also suggests that Malay political speeches possess their own rhetorical techniques.
