Abstract

The purpose of this study was to observe the perception of teachers about developing their career via distance education in two schools in Kuala Lumpur. The main aspects of this study include determining whether the teaching profession needs development and aspect, which needs development. The researcher also analyses problems faced by teachers to develop their career, teacher's knowledge about distance education and their perceptions about professional development via distance education. The subject of the study comprised J5f 30 secondary school teachers and 30 primary school teachers. A set of questionnaires was used as the research instrument. Frequency counts and percentages were used in the statistical analysis of data. Findings of the study indicate that majority of teachers agreed that they need career development. Teachers are very much interested to attend courses but face problems like money and heavy responsibilities in school. Findings also show that teacher's knowledge about distance education is very disappointing. Teachers also showed a negative attitude towards professional development via distance education. The implication of this study, suggestions and recommendations for future studies were also included in this report.
