Abstract
The main aim of this research is to study and identify errors in numerals and quantifiers in the Japanese Language which are often made by the Malay students at MARA University of Technology, Shah Alam. The writer attempts 10 find factors that cause these errors and suggests various methods to solve the problems. A survey has been carried out as a background study. 19 sets of questionnaire were administered to the students of the Diploma in Tourism Management, faculty of Hotel Management and Tourism. UiTM. The aim of this study is to get feedback on the errors that always occurred, and to learn the importance and the need to master both topics and bow they relate to their jobs in future. In this study, there are two methods of analysis and there are (i) Contrastive Analysis and (ii) Error Analysis. ln the study of contrastive analysis, the writer makes a comparison between the numerals and quantifiers of the Malay and Japanese Languages. The similarities and the differences in the characteristics between the two languages plus a few predictions pertaining to the errors that the students might make are also explained. An attempt at error analysis is made to check the mistakes that actually occurred. For this purpose, a few exercises and tests were given to I 00 students of UiTM from the Faculty of Business Management, Information Technology and Science Computer. For this study, only 20 answer scripts were selected at random to identify and analyze the mistakes made by the students. This study highlights the errors often made by students in the learning of the Japanese numerals and quantifiers. They are shown to have been caused by the differences in the system between the students' mother tongue and the foreign language that they learned. The interference of the mother tongue is also found to have caused the errors. Finally, a few suggestions are given to the teachers, text books' writers and researchers, on bow to overcome the- problems that students might face during the process of learning the Japanese numerals and quantifiers.
