Abstract

The community's interest towards literature is seen to be on the decline. Neither do they seem to understand nor appreciate the significance of literature in molding the ways of thoughts of the people. This is due to the ever increasing cost of living, wide range of entertainment media and the government policy. The role and significance of literature no longer becomes predominant. Thus this study aims at reassessing the status of literature in the daily life of the community, especially the students and teachers of secondary schools in Sarawak. The methods being applied are through questionnaires focusing on the statistics on the reading of literary books published by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, Sarawak Branch, the respondents' knowledge on the role and significance of literature, the effectiveness of literature as a curriculum in schools and finally the number of literary books being sold in comparison to other categories. Findings of this study shows a positive trend in the understanding, confidence and awareness of the secondary schools' students and teachers on the role and significance of literature. However the level of reading of literary books are still low. Concrete measures are required to instill the lack of reading of literary books among the community. In comparison, the literary books published by DBP surpassed other nonliterary books in term of standard.
