Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the types of disciplinary problems among students in two religious secondary schools: Sekolah Menengah Ugama (Arab) Taqaddum Ma'arif Pasir Tumbuh, Kota Bharu, Kelantan [SMU(A) and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (Agama) Melor, Padang Raja, Kota Bharu, Kelantan [SMK(A)]. The study also examined factors causing student indiscipline in the two schools. The third objective or the study was to identify strategies to curb student indiscipline in both schools. The researcher uses a questionnaire, record reference and observation in this study respondent involved for the questionnaire are 60 students from SMU(A) and 60 students from SMK(A) and 10 teachers and 10 parents from both school. Records that used in this study for the SMU(A) are The Book of School Disciplinary Regulation, Student Disciplinary Records: Action and Punishment, Students School Agreement Record, Prefect Note Book, Students Attendance Record and Teachers Attendance Record. For the SMK(A), the same records were used except for the Students - School Agreement Record. Aspects that were observed by the researcher in this study included school culture, relationship among students, relationship between students anti school's staff, student's obedience towards school's rules and regulation. the cleanliness of the school compound and school's toilet, students attitude al the beginning of school's session, students attitude in the learning session, in the recess and at the end of school's session. Finding of the study show that types of indiscipline in SMU(A) and SMK(A) can be categorized as destructive attitude, rudeness, dishonesty, absenteeism, lateness, untidiness and carelessness toward studies. Factors that influenced students indisciplinary in both schools are caused by the schools itself, which is student does not understand what the school's regulation wants, the students were influenced by their peers negative attitude, the lateness or the teachers to school and to class for the learning session, teachers smoking in the school area and the interactive teaching method used by the teacher in the learning session. The external factors such as how the students comes to school, where they live, the distance of their house to school and with whom they are living with, are less influenced to the cases of breaking school's rules and regulation by the students of SMU(A) and SMK(A) The following strategies are proposed to encourage students to conform lo school 1. The principal has to provide effective school management and leadership to teachers and students. 2. Teachers have lo conform to school regulations to serve as models to students. 3. All school regulations must be explicitly communicated lo students and teachers. 4. The intent and purposes of school regulations must be clearly explained to students so that school regulations become meaningful to them.
