Abstract
This study explores the role of motivational techniques in improving college students' reading skills. The study employed an experimental design involving an experimental and a control group. A Pretest and a Posttest as well as an Index of Reading Awareness (IRA) were used to gather data for the study. Two c lasses consisting of 52 students of similar English language ability were randomly selected and taught by two different teachers. The Experimental group was exposed to selected motivational techniques in the reading classroom while the Control group received no instruction in motivational techniques during reading instruction. The Pretest, Posttest and Index of Reading Awareness (IRA) were administered to both groups at the beginning and end of the experiment To determine the usefulness of motivational techniques in the reading classroom two research questions were posed. 1) How do motivational techniques improve students' reading skills? 2) What are students' perceptions of selected motivational techniques used to motivate and improve their reading skills? The findings demonstrated that the use of motivational techniques were helpful in improving the experimental group's reading skills as compared to their counterparts in the Control group. A comparison of the pre and post scores and the IRA scores indicated that the Experimental group benefited from the use of motivational techniques in their reading classroom. The qualitative data from reading tasks and dialogue journals of the Experimental group showed that the students prefer the learner-centred approach in the reading classroom. The study implies that teachers should consider the use of motivational techniques in reading instruction.
