Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the intensity of stress and the dominant stressor among principals and headmasters from various school in Miri-Bintulu Division. The main objective of this study is to identify the common strategies used by principals and headmasters to overcome stress and determine whether there are significant differences in the level of stress among the principals and headmasters based on demographic factors like sex, location of school and duration in service as principal or headmaster. A total of 30 principals and 40 headmasters were selected to participant in this study. The Administrative Stress Index (ASI) questionnaire was used to measure stress level and Coping Preference Scale (CPS) was used to determine the ways of coping stress. The results of the study shows that principals and headmasters in Miri-Bintulu Division experienced medium level stress. The most dominant stressor is a high expectation from the Ministry of Education or Education Department, whereas the most commonly used technique to overcome stress is to practice good humanistic relationship skills among staffs, students and parents. There was a significant differences at .05 level in stress intensity between principals or headmasters from urban and rural schools. Since stress cannot be avoided, identification of effective coping strategies may provide school principa.18 and headmasters with the mechanism which can be used to reduce stress due to environmental and to moderate the effect of stress on individual.
