Abstract

This study focuses on the feminine writings of our local authors who have graduated from Taiwan universities. This group of local writers has not only made a name for themselves in the Taiwan literary arena but have captured the attention of the Chinese literary works worldwide. Not only have they produced a large amount of fine work, but they have also won many important Chinese literary awards in their respected field. They are a source of pride to Malaysia and have introduced local and 'Nanyang' literature to our people. In this study, three writers namely Li Yongping, Shang Wanyun and Pan Yutong are chosen as representatives of Taiwan-graduate local authors. The genre focused in this paper is fiction. The unique writing style of each individual here has successfully highlighted the theme of feminism which undoubtedly captured the heart of readers. The female character in Li Yong Ping' s fiction is made up of indigenous as well as Chinese women from different spectrum of society. Shang Wanyu.n' s creative writing not only includes traditional and modem feminine roles, but also touches on the controversial subject of lesbianism. Meanwhile, Pan Yutong writes mainly about lower class female characters such as prostitutes. This paper aims to comment and analyze the themes as well as the roles of female characters found in this fiction. It is known that the three writers demonstrate unique personal writing style. Nevertheless, there are still similarities among them. This is clearly seen in the portrayal of female image and the implicit issues pertaining to the female gender. Evidently, the creative fictional writings of our local Taiwan­ graduates contain high aesthetic value that can contribute to the development in the Mahua literary arena.
