Abstract

The development of Malaysian theatre, since the period of rapid growth at the 70s till today, it' s only 30 years of history in the area of script writing and stage performance, has shown an achievement. However, in tenn of academic research, apart from the works done by Mana Sikana, Solehah Ishak, Nur Nina Zuhra and others, it is very much lacking, especially in the scope of theatre directing, it is virtually none.  Hence, the objective of this thesis is to study and reveal the formation and development of theatre directing in the local English and Malay theatre, with focus on Krishen' s directing method and concept. An analysis on Krishen' s comprehension of theatre and his directing method was carried out, subsequently trying to establish the latest status on local theatre directing. It is hope that by applying the Western directing analysis method as a guidance, a form of local directing theory can be traced. The central of discussion is based on the observation made through out the rehearsal of his work piece "Skin Trilogy" .  The study revealed that the directing method of Krishen Jit not only search for all the possibilities in theatre making, but it is also shows that the most effective function of theatre is interaction between the individuals involved, that' s including director, performer, artist, designer and the interaction with the audience. Space which is given by the director for all the participants in theatre creativity has expressed the equal right existed between them. This type of theatre is capable to grow and advance than a theatre which is depends solely on the creativity from the director alone. It is quite certain that this is the first attempt a subject of research on directing was conducted, which hope it will contribute to the history of Malaysian theatre directing.
