Abstract

The purpose of this experimental study is lo gauge the effectiveness of the LKM 400 course (Bahasa Malaysia IV) in raising the standard of writing Argumentative Composition among the students of the Faculty of Engineering in Universiti Sains Malaysia, Perak Branch Campus on the aspects of content, organization, language and writing in general. Eighty students were chosen for sample from the various Faculty of Engineering. The samples were divided into two groups which consist of Malay Students Group (KPM) and Non-Malay Students Group (KPBM) with each having forty students. The students were given a pre-test to gauge their standard of writing Argumentative Composition. After that, the students were taught the LKM 400 Course (Bahasa Malaysia IV) and the content of the course covers the learning of grammatical rules, types of composition and the effective writing methodology. Then, the students are given a post-test to gauge their standard of writing Argumentative Composition after taking the course. The analysis of data was carried out using the t-test. The result of the study shows that there were significant differences (p < 0.05) on the aspects of content, organisation, language and writing in general for both groups (KPM) and (KPBM) in their writing of Argumentative Composition.
